THE
WORSHIP OF GOD (111:1-2):
The psalmist
sets out his resolve to praise God; the manner in
which he would praise God; and the company with whom
he would do praise God.
There are three
parts in this Psalm:
This
psalm of praise celebrates :-
God’s
glorious Person
His
marvellous Provision
His
mighty Power
The
writer begins the Psalm by saying that he is going
to praise God.
He will praise
the Lord with all his heart.
He will praise
God with a few close friends and he will praise God
in the large assemblies of God’s people. While the
praise rises from his heart it is not secret praise.
Not only
secretly, but also “in the assembly of the
upright.”
He
does not say that he does not need to go to Church
in order to praise God. In fact, the opposite is
true. He gets real pleasure testifying to the Lord's
greatness before the Lord’s people. His worship is
a glorious praise of the Lord’s greatness in the
assembly of the Lord’s people. His worship of God
is concerned with extolling the Wonders of God.
Here is someone
who has already spent time, in God’s presence and
in God’s Word, quietly admiring God. The picture
he has of God in his mind’s eye is vastly
different from the picture most people have of God
today.
He
will praise the Lord because of who the Lord is
(111:2-4,7).
Note the
words used he uses to describe God’s Person.
He is glorious,
majestic, righteous, gracious, merciful, just, good,
and trustworthy.
He remembers
God’s provision
He will praise
the Lord because of what the Lord has done (111:5-6,
8-9)
He
provides food (111:5): Those who trust him do not go
hungry.
He
remembers his covenant (111:5,9):
He
always keeps his promises.
He
gives his people their inheritance (111:6):
He praises
God’s power
God
shows his power by giving them the lands of other
nations.
God’s
commandments are true (111:8):
God
is to be obeyed faithfully and with integrity.
God
redeems his people (111:9): He pays a full ransom
for his people.
The psalmist
responds to God in reverence and awe. How will I
respond? How will you respond?
10
The reverent fear and worship of the Lord is the
beginning of Wisdom and skill [the preceding and the
first essential, the prerequisite and the alphabet];
a good understanding, wisdom, and meaning have all
those who do [the will of the Lord]. Their praise of
Him endures forever. (Amplified Bible)
“Reverence
for the LORD is the foundation of true wisdom.”
Those who obey
him are rewarded with wisdom.
